In dentistry, a metal crown is made of base metal alloys like nickel and chromium. It can also be made of gold alloy. The crowns made up of metal have incredible strength and require a small amount of tooth structure that has to be removed.

Here are a few advantages and disadvantages of metal crowns:

Advantages of Metal Crowns

  • They are very strong.
  • Gold crowns have excellent quality.
  • Metal crowns cause the least amount of wearing to the surrounding teeth when you compare them with other materials.
  • They require a little amount of trimming.
  • These crowns are long-lasting and are more resistant to breakage and chipping than other types of crowns.
  • People with strong chewing habits should get these as they tend to grind and clench their teeth.

Disadvantages of Metal Crowns

The main disadvantage of metal dental crowns is their color. The shade of the metal crown is not the same as the color of our natural teeth. On the other hand, ceramic crowns closely resemble natural teeth and are hence concealed nicely.

This is the reason why most people prefer ceramic crowns to metal crowns.

Final Thoughts

If you are thinking of getting a metal crown, this may help you decide. Go through the advantages and disadvantages of the metal crown and make an informed decision.
