Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay, dental cavities, cracks, or injury. The damaged or decayed portion of the tooth is removed and silver amalgam or composite fillings are then used to repair it.

Dental fillings are not permanent and may need to eventually be replaced. However, they are quite durable and should last many years before needing replacement.

Reason for Dental Fillings

Below are a few of the most common reasons why you may need to get a dental filling:

  • Decayed teeth
  • Closing a small space between teeth
  • Teeth that have been cracked or broken
  • Repairing a chipped tooth

Receiving a Dental Filling

Dental fillings can usually be taken care of during one appointment. The affected tooth will be numbed and Dr. Joshua Kelly will remove the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth. The area will then be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the dental filling. If the damage is close to the nerves of the tooth, medication will be applied for extra protection. Next, the filling will be placed on the tooth, shaped, and polished, restoring the tooth to its original look and function.

After the filling has been placed, it’s normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. However, once your tooth acclimates to the new filling, this sensitivity will subside.
