How Eating Disorders Can Affect Your Oral Health

Bad eating habits can lead to lingering and permanent damage to your teeth. Eaton dentists suggest that detecting eating disorders early may ensure a smoother and better recovery period for not just your teeth but also your body. If you get help from Eaton family dentists, the damage to your teeth and mouth can be reversed. Eaton dentists provide their patients the right information and guidance for good oral health hygiene.

Here are some reasons eating disorders can affect your overall health.

1. Lack of Proper Nutrition: If you lack proper nutrition, the soft tissues and gums in your mouth may start bleeding. Saliva-producing glands may also swell, leading to dry mouth. To ensure that you do not develop nutritional deficiencies, Eaton dentists suggest you incorporate foods in your diet that are rich in calcium, iron, and B vitamins. Insufficient nutrients promote gum disease and tooth decay, affecting your oral health.

2. Compulsive Overeating or Binge Eating: Binge eating is not only harmful to your body but also to your oral health. Eaton dentists recommend their patients avoid overeating and, more importantly, that they avoid binge eating sugary foods, especially between meals. Eating sugary foods between meals aids the bacteria in our mouth to form plaque on our teeth and, if left untreated, leads to tooth decay.

3. Anorexia and Bulimia: This eating disorder deals with people who have an extreme fear of gaining weight. This affects them to the extent that they force themselves to throw up. If someone has an eating disorder, it is important to consult your health care provider.

If you have any eating disorders and live in Windsor, Greeley, Eaton, Ault, Fort Collins, Severance, or CO, visit Severance Dental and get yourself treated by our professionals.
